La Paz, English en Nederlands

An intersting city. Totaly different from the world I know. I walked around through this strange city (9 million inhabitants). Visited some museums (nice ones). Met nice people, some of them I have traveled together with on the Misti. We have eaten together in a nice restaurant. I looked over this big city from a mirador, about 400 m higher, impressive.
Now I know why Bolivia is called one of the most authentic countries of S-America. In 1870 the country was cut of the Pacific ocean by the Pacific war against Chili. Since then the European influences diminished a lot, because it was not such an intersting country any more.

I read the papers very often, because of the political situation. A very complicated conflict is going on. And it has to do with the action of the president (Evo Morales) to change the constitution. The reason he wants to do that is that it gives him the possibility to reduce foreign influences (especialy the USA and big companies). He is left wing and works together with Hugo Chavez (Venezuela), who seems to do about the same things.
Morales is the first president from ´the People´(he is an Aymara indian). Unfortunately the country is split and the opposition is led by prefects (regional government). 7 of the 9 prefects are not of the same party of Morales. Morales intents to ask the people again, by a referendum, for support. I think a wise decision. This is a very poor country, and I think the people deserve to profit from their own sources.

Incredible how low prices here are: my bus between Copacabana and La Paz, 3 hours: 2 euro.
A full menu (4 courses), 2 euro. A rather good hotelroom: 6 euro. Can you imagine???

Tomorrow I will travel to Brazil. After that visit I will update my pictures.


Een zeer interessante stad, totaal verschillend van wat ik ken. Ik heb wat rondgewandeld en wat musea bezocht. Leuke mensen ontmoet, o.a. mensen die ik al diverse keren op deze reis heb ontmoet, waaronder mijn Misti-collega´s. Samen gegeten in een leuk restaurant.
Ik heb uitgekeken over de stad vanuit een 400 m hoger gelegen uitkijkpunt. Indrukwekkend.
Nu weet ik waarom Bolivia een van de meest authentieke landen van zuid Amerika wordt genoemd. Sinds 1870 is het land door de Pacific oorlog, die ze van Chili verloren afgesneden van de Oceaan. Sinds die tijd is de instroom van Europese invloeden duidelijk verminderd, en was het land inmiddels minder interessant geworden.

Ik lees de kranten vaak om op de hoogte te blijven van het politieke conflict dat hier aan de gang is. De president (Evo Morales) wil de grondwet veranderen om zodoende de buitenlandse invloeden te beperken (USA en grote bedrijven) en meer mogelijkheden te krijgen het geld van de eigen bronnen in het land te houden. Hij krijgt hierbij veel oppositie van de prefecten (een soort commisarissen van de koningin, ofwel provincie leiders). 7 van de 9 zijn niet van dezelfde partij als de president. Morales heeft nu voorgesteld om dit conflict door een referendum aan het volk voor te leggen. Ik denk een verstandige beslissing.
Morales werkt nauw samen met Hugo Chavez (Venezuela) die vergelijkbare dingen doet.
Dit land is erg arm en verdient het over de eigen bronnen te kunnen beschikken.

Ongelooflijk hoe laag de prijzen hier zijn. Een busrit van Copacabana naar La Paz, 3 uur kost 2 euro. Een volledig menu in een behoorlijk restaurant heb je al voor 2 Euro. Mijn hotelkamer, een behoorlijk niveau: 6 Euro. Stel je voor.

Morgen vlieg ik naar Brazilie, daarna zal ik de foto´s updaten (weekje, denk ik).

Communication, English en Nederlands

From now on my facilities to update my Blog and to write mails are a little bit limited. I was a little bit spoilt by my Nokia communicator, but in Bolivia I cannot use it, unfortunately.I could write the messages in any lost moment (travelling or in a restaurant). Now I have to go to internet café´s (like almost everyone, of course). So my messages will me somewhat shorter, I expect.Tomorrow I will leave to La Paz and in the weekend I will fly to Brazi, the Pantanal, where I will stay for a week.During my visit to the Pantanal I expect to be at a far distance from internet, so probably I will be silent for about a week. Before the weekend I will update my pictures.


Mijn internet mogelijkheden zijn in Bolivia wat beperkt. Ik moet nu voor alles naar een internet café, terwijl ik tot nu toe bijna alles kon afwikkelen met mijn Nokia. Dat was veel handiger omdat ik de Blog bijwerkte in verloren uurtjes, bijvoorbeeld tijdens het reizen.Maar ik pas me wel aan. De berichten zullen dus wel wat schaarser worden.Moregn ga ik even naar La Paz en vlieg het weekend door naar Brazilie (de Pantanal). Ik verwacht dat ik daar helemaal geen mogelijkheden heb om iets met internet te doen, dus zal het tot eind volgende week misschien wel erg rustig worden. We zien wel.
